Guidelines
Arbutus accepts work continuously throughout the year.
We do not publish in an issue format, but add work to the site as it
is accepted.
Arbutus only accepts e-mail submissions.
Do not send your work as an attachment. We do not open
them. In the subject line please include:
- "Submission" Your Name
- Genre
- Word Count or Number of Poems
We try to respond in 2-3 months, and we respond only to the e-mail
address the submission was sent from. A cover letter is optional.
We read
the work first, and read biographies and publication lists only after
work
has been accepted.
Fiction and Essays:
We do not publish genre fiction (Romance, Horror, etc.). We are looking
for original stories with engaging plot, memorable characters, and
strong language.
Essays can range from thoughts on craft, politics, or personal
experience. Work currently deemed"Creative Nonfiction" is welcome, we
have chosen the term "Essays" in an attempt
to encompass a larger spectrum of writing. Surprise us.
Engage
us. Stay
under 7000 words.
Note: If you have not heard from the prose editor
in three months you can safely assume it is not a match for Arbutus.
Simultaneous submissions are encouraged.
Poetry:
Send 3-5. There are no restrictions on style
or form, but our taste tends to lean toward poetry that
displays a mastery of language and uses form to enhance content.
